ASTM A354 is a fastener specification covering quenched and tempered alloy steel bolts, studs, and other externally threaded fasteners up to 4” diameter for application at normal atmospheric conditions where high strength is required, and for limited application at elevated temperature.
ASTM A354 covers two different levels of strength, BC and BD.
Applications
ASTM A354 is a general purpose specification. Unlike many ASTM fastener specifications, A354 is not intended for a specific application, other than any application which requires high strength fasteners.
A354 fasteners are not limited to any specific configurations. Headed bolts, fully threaded studs, or any other externally threaded fastener is allowable under A354.
Product Marking
All A354 products are required to be marked with the manufacturer’s unique symbol, and with the grade identification. Headed bolts must have the markings on the top of the bolt head, and rods and studs must have the markings on one end.
A354BC products are to be marked “BC”
A354BD products are to be marked “BD”
For grade BD bolts, marking may include 6 radial lines in addition to the other marking requirements.
Dimensions
Unless otherwise specified, headed bolts shall be hex with dimensions covered under ASME B18.2.1. Unless otherwise specified, threads shall be the Unified National Coarse Thread Series as specified in B1.1, and shall have Class 2A tolerances.
